Asst. Professor Elizabeth van Es presents at the Preparing the Next Generation of Secondary Mathematics Teachers Conference at UC San Diego on May 3rd: Using Video to Support Pre-Service Teacher Learning
The two-day conference called "Preparing the Next Generation of Secondary Mathematics Teachers: How Pedagogy Emerges from Learning Mathematics" brought together mathematicians and mathematics educators who are involved or interested in teacher education. Conference speakers explored how the development of mathematical pedagogy is inextricably tied to the development of the teachers' mathematical knowledge. A major focus of the conference was to explore how effective mathematical pedagogy can emerge from the Cal Teach programs that have been developed at the University of California campuses. Cal Teach groups from various UC campuses identified key principles that are guiding their Cal Teach programs and explained how this framework has influenced the undergraduate education minor.
For her presentation, Dr. van Es discussed how video can be used to help pre-service teachers “learn to notice.” She shared research related to teacher noticing and then presented a design for a pre-service course that uses video to help future teachers learn to observe and analyze teaching. Additionally, she discussed three different types of video-based environments that she uses to help pre-service teachers learn to notice: (1) structured video-case materials, (2) video-annotation software, and (3) video clubs. |
