Some Thoughtful Quotes from Winter 2004 Students

" I love playing with and observing the children. Amazingly enough, you learn a lot from them without even knowing it. Being around children has made me realize that I truly want to be a teacher. I love them so much and I hate that I have to part with them. But I have to come to realize that when I have my own students to teach, I will have to part with them as well. "

"Through out the weeks that I have spent with the kids at Wilson it seems that I have grown to adore them. They are very cute and I've gotten to know them as real people not just as an assignment. My advice to students coming into the program would be to not be too concerned about [their] assignments. That was how I was in the beginning because I always felt that as tutor I should help with homework and stuff, but kids can learn other way as well. This program was set up, in my mind, to give these children a safe place to come to after school and to just hang out and have a place to play. But most importantly, it is for these children to get to know you and to have someone to talk to."

"For an incoming student, I'd advise them to be themselves and just let yourself have fun with the kids. They are all a good group, and great kids. Just be honest with the kids, and when the oppertunities come to get to know them better or teach them things, grab hold of it."

"What I would never forget was the smiles on their faces when they completed the project. They were so proud of it. I wish I could see that expression again, but unfortunately I can not. One particular advice that I would give to a student coming into the program is to have fun. Do not hold back. Do not be embarrassed. Enjoy the time you have to act like a kid again."
