| General Information CLASS SIZE: We
maintain an approximate 17:1 student to teacher ratio in our classes.
Although most of our classes are team taught, a few may only have
one instructor. Classes may be canceled or combined due to
insufficient enrollment.
COST: $325 One Writing Course $325 One Math/Science Course $600 One Writing and One Math/Science Course INSTRUCTORS: The courses are team taught by credentialed teachers in local schools who have training from the UCI / California Mathematics Science & Writing Projects. These teachers use innovative lessons and teaching strategies to bring rich learning experience to their students. LUNCH: Students attending both mornings and afternoon sessions should bring a sack lunch to eat between 11:30 am and 12:00 pm. We supervise students during lunch and escort them to class. Due to the religious faith of the Tarbut V' Torah Day School, we would appreciate if you could provide your kids with vegetarian / kosher lunch. CANCELLATIONS: We can only refund fees if the cancellation is received before the first day of instruction. To cancel, notify the UCI Writing Project Office at (949) 824-3665. We will send the refund (minus a $65 processing fee) within six to eight weeks. |
Common Questions My child has
problems with Writing/Mathematics/Science. Will these courses be
too advanced?
The young Writers' and Mathematicians' / Scientists' classes are geared to put students at ease and improve students' skills. Teachers make allowances for the different ability levels in their classroom and gear lessons accordingly. Minimal homework is given, and students do not receive grades on their work; instead, they receive much feedback from their teachers as well as their peers. My child is in GATE. Is the Young Writers' and Mathematicians' / Scientists' class an accelerated program? The programs are enrichment, as opposed to accelerated programs; no placement tests are required, and no college credit is given. The courses are designed to expand students' critical thinking skills as well as give them many opportunities for hands-on learning. GATE children can benefit by not only learning new strategies for writing and problem solving but also by learning to explain their solutions in both written and oral form. These programs were developed in response to the poor critical thinking and writing skills demonstrated by entering college freshmen who had excelled and scored high on placement test but were ill-equipped to handle college assignments. My child will be in the third grade next fall but is already doing sixth grade math. What class should I register her for? Register your child for the class he/she will enter in the fall. Studies have shown that accelerated students often have as much difficulty with their critical thinking skills as do their peers and that relating to one's peers is an important part of the educational experience. My child has problems with grammar and spelling. Will the Young Writer's Workshop help? The focus in the writing classes is on fluency, on getting the words out first, and then on revising and editing. Teachers guide students through the seven stages of the writing process: prewriting, planning, writing, sharing, revising, editing, and evaluating. Grammar and spelling are addressed and corrected in the final stages of writing. Studies have shown that students' spelling and grammar often improve with much time spent writing in a non-stressful atmosphere, through reading good writing models, and through learning the rules of correctness in the meaningful context of their own writing. |
