Chin-Hsi Lin
Chin-Hsi Lin Chose UC Irvine's Ph.D. in Education Program for its
Language, Literacy, and Technology Specialization
Irvine, Calif., April 1, 2008
Originally from Taiwan, Chin-Hsi Lin completed his B.A. in Chinese
Language Studies and his M.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language
at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei. Prior to joining the
Ph.D. in Education program at UC Irvine, Chin-Hsi taught Chinese to
foreigners in Taiwan and conducted several studies related to technology
and language learning. Chin-his also conducted web-based courses on
written Chinese for Keio University and Waseda University in Japan and
co-authored two textbooks for native speakers.
Chin-Hsi's passion is to explore the challenging inter-disciplinary area
of technology-facilitated student learning -- the effects of how
technologies are gradually reforming traditional teacher-centered
learning. He believes that though there is increasing focus on this
field, there are more and more questions arising: To what extent do
technologies aid or hinder student learning? What is a better way for
teachers to integrate technologies in language teaching? Questions such
as these brought Chin-Hsi to UC Irvine because the UCI Ph.D. in
Education is one of the few programs that have special interest in
language learning and technology.
Chin-Hsi is focusing his research interests on computer-mediated
communication (CMC) in Chinese language learning, the relationship
between reading and writing, and Chinese character learning. His first
year doctoral project is entitled "Computer-mediated Communication and
Chinese Language Learning." In addition to his studies, Chin-Hsi also is
lecturing in the StarTalk-Chinese project, one of the projects of the
National Security Language Initiative. He and a colleague will publish
the book Multimedia and Chinese Teaching in Fall 2008. Chin-His also
maintains a website and writes articles to promote the professional
growth of Chinese teachers.
After graduation, Chin-Hsi intends to offer training to Chinese teachers
to help teachers integrate technology into their teaching, and he plans
to develop online resources to facilitate student learning.
