DOE Graduate Robert Pletka, Ed.D., honored at 38th Annual Lauds & Laurels Award Ceremony

Dr. Robert (Bob) Pletka, Superintendent of El Centro Elementary School District and a 2007 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, was one of 18 alumni, friends, and students who were honored for their dedication and commitment to education and to UC Irvine at the UC Irvine Alumni Association's 38th Lauds & Laurels Awards Ceremony on May 8th.

In acknowledging Dr. Pletka's contributions, the Alumni Association wrote:

Motivating students to learn is a challenge that Bob Plekta has dedicated his career to overcoming as a teacher, mentor, administrator, and innovator in education. While a doctoral student, he created an innovative project to inspire students to learn in a collaborative environment. The project was supported by corporations and professionals whom Bob solicited for donations of technology, financial support, and time as mentors. The project culminated in his first book, My So-Called Digital Life, which engaged more than 2,000 students from differing backgrounds across California who documented their daily lives using 300 cameras and featured original photography and writing from the participants. Over the past 38 years, the Lauds & Laurels Awards have honored and celebrated the accomplishments of more than 600 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and community friends of UC Irvine. The participation of alumni and friends in the Lauds & Laurels program allows the UC Irvine Alumni Association to award more than $80,000 annually in scholarships to meritorious undergraduate and graduate students so they may pursue their educational goals at UC Irvine.
