ACT sponsors a Summer Internship Program, offered annually to outstanding doctoral students interested in careers related to assessment and educational studies. The eight-week program provides interns with practical experience through completion of a project, seminars, and direct interaction with professional staff responsible for research and development of testing programs and other educational services.

The goals of the AERA Dissertation and Research Grants Programs are (a) to stimulate research on issues related to U.S. education policy and practice using National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and National Science Foundation (NSF) data sets; (b) to improve the education research community's firsthand knowledge of the range of data available at the two agencies and how to use them; and (c) to increase the number of education researchers using the data sets. Underrepresented minority researchers are strongly encouraged to apply. Dissertation grants are up to $15,000 for 1-year projects. Research grants are up to $20,000 for 1-year projects, or up to $35,000 for 2-year projects.

American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Division 15 (Educational Psychology) of the American Psychological Association offers two Dissertation Research Awards to provide monetary support to students who are currently preparing to conduct dissertation research. The awards provide financial support for promising educational psychology doctoral students who have submitted a study proposal and are preparing to collect their dissertation data. ASHA/Lumina Dissertation Fellowships aim to promote innovative scholarship by creating an intergenerational community of scholars who will examine social, institutional, and policy barriers to opportunity and student success. The fellowships are intended to advance new research questions, methodologies, and frameworks for the study of access and success that go beyond what is already known about critical topics related to, for example, college choice, financial aid, and student retention. The grant will fund eight to ten dissertation fellowships a year for a three-year period.
The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) offers dissertation research support, conducted in partnership with State Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) lead agencies, regarding child care policy issues. Eligible Applicants are doctoral-level graduate students enrolled in accredited public, State-controlled, and private institutions of higher education, including Faith-based institutions of higher education, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and Tribally Controlled Land Grant Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Applicants may apply for project periods up to two years and will be awarded up to $30,000 for the first year and up to $20,000 for the second year of the project. Six individual grants are expected to be awarded. Letters of intent are due March 2, 2009, and applications are due March 30, 2009.

The Congressional Black Caucus Fellows Program offers nine-month Fellowships for research and public policy analysis. Since its inception, more than 150 individuals have served as Fellows; many have progressed to full-time positions on Capitol Hill and in public policy organizations.

ETS offers several programs for scholars who either hold a doctoral degree or who are enrolled in a doctoral program in the field of educational research, measurement and related fields and who are interested in research opportunities. Areas of emphasis include the following: measurement theory, validity, natural language processing and computational linguistics, cognitive psychology, learning theory, linguistics, speech recognition and processing, teaching and classroom research, statistics, international large scale assessments. The program aims to attract women and minority graduate students to the field of education and related disciplines. Each graduate intern will receive $4,000 for the internship period. Interns will be reimbursed for limited round-trip travel from their university to Princeton, consistent with the Educational Testing Service travel policy.
The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship grants awards at the Predoctoral, Dissertation and, Postdoctoral levels to students who demonstrate excellence, a commitment to diversity, and a desire to enter the professoriate. Annually the Fellowship awards approximately 60 Predoctoral Awards at $20,000 per year for up to three years, 35 Dissertation Awards at $21,000 for one year, and 20 Postdoctoral Awards at $40,000 for one year.

Funds for Child Care Research Scholars grants are available to support dissertation research on child care policy issues in partnership with State Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) lead agencies. Funding is dependent on availability and government interest. Since 2000, grants have supported projects that add to our knowledge about the efficacy of child care subsidy policies and programs in supporting employment and self-sufficiency outcomes for parents, and providing positive learning and school readiness outcomes for children.

The Adolescent Literacy Predoctoral Fellowship is administered by NAED with funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The program supports doctoral research aimed at improving literacy outcomes for middle and secondary school students. Fellows participate in ongoing training activities to interact with and learn from leading researchers in the field of adolescent literacy and in activities that promote building a community of scholars. Twenty fellows receive a stipend of $25,000, disbursed over a period of up to two years, to support finalizing the dissertation proposal and collecting data. Applicants should be a candidate for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States.

The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) is the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) partner with the Gates Millennium Scholars Program. In addition to increasing access to higher education for individuals from groups that have traditionally and historically been denied or discouraged from pursuing this path, this scholarship program provides opportunities for scholars to prepare for leadership roles in their professions and in their communities.
The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans provides opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family.
Alpha Association of Phi Beta Kappa Alumni in Southern California funds and administers a scholarship program for foreign students engaged in graduate study in Southern California in academic institutions with Phi Beta Kappa Chapters. In granting scholarship awards, the academic committee considers both need and merit. The best students are awarded scholarships. Scholarship funds are not awarded to students who are not in need of the funds.

The Student and Early Career Committee (SECC) of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) bestows up to five non-renewable awards in the amount of $2,000 (maximum) for dissertation research proposals that merit special recognition and display the strong potential to contribute to the field of child development. Applicants must be SRCD members and have their dissertation proposals approved by their advisor. Submissions should be in the proposal stage (i.e., not completed). Students may apply for the award prior to dissertation committee approval, but funding will not be issued until the research project has been approved by the dissertation committee. Money is to be used for research costs or professional development related to the proposed dissertation project.

The Coalition of Essential Schools Theodore R. Sizer Dissertation Scholars Program aims: (1) to stimulate research on CES schools and practice; (2) to increase our understanding of the effectiveness of the ten common principles and CES practice, and (3) to encourage a new generation of scholars and educational researchers examining the CES philosophy. The Faculty Mentor Program (FMP) forms an important link in the continuum of support for academically promising graduate students. This award assists recipients in acquiring and developing advanced research skills under faculty mentorship. It is designed to improve mentoring for UCI doctoral students who are not yet at the dissertation stage and have not yet advanced to candidacy and is expected to increase the number of students who complete their Ph.D. degree and successfully acquire a faculty appointment.

The Outstanding Dissertation Award in the Politics of Education, the PEA Dissertation Award, is designed to foster and support graduate student research and publication on political processes and outcomes in organized education grades preK-16, from the United States and abroad. One aim is to highlight and reward scholars studying political issues in education, as distinct from the interdisciplinary approaches taken by policy studies.
