Biography

Teomara (Teya) Rutherford is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Education at the University of California, Irvine specializing in Learning, Cognition, and Development. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Computers from Florida International University and a Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law where she was an articles editor on the Boston University Law Review.

Teya has taught a variety of subjects from swimming to computers to algebra and has previously been able to blend her legal and education background as a Public School Liaison for the Massachusetts Department of Education. She plans to continue to draw on these experiences to research and publish scholarly work easily translated to practitioners and policy-makers.

Teomara is most interested in how individuals analyze their capabilities and past experiences to make educational and life choices, especially toward higher education and into a career. This is an area that mostly involves motivation, cognition, and self-regulated learning. Teya conducts her research under the guidance of Professor Michael Martinez and Asstistant Professor AnneMarie Conley.

Teya moved to Southern California from Massachusetts in September 2009 with her husband and two daughters. Before moving, she worked in the Worcester area as an educational/legal consultant and an award-winning photographer. More information on her research is available on her personal page at http://teomararutherford.com..
