Research
Professor Santagata's research interests are in two areas: (1) mathematics teaching and learning in different cultures, and (2) teacher learning and professional development, with a focus on the use of multimedia technology to foster teacher professional growth. Her investigations employ a variety of methodologies, depending on a particular project's research goals and questions. These include qualitative approaches (case studies, ethnography, and discourse analysis) and quantitative investigations (pre- and post-test comparisons, experimental and quasi-experimental studies). Video and multimedia technologies have always been integral to her projects.
Professor Santagata is currently Co-PI of two research studies:
- Algebra Learning for All (ALEA - funded by the Institute of Education Sciences; PI: Jim Stigler) is an experimental study of a teacher professional development program implemented in a high-poverty and low-performing school district.
- Assessing Teacher Knowledge of Teaching Mathematics (TeKno - funded by the Institute of Education Sciences; PI: Nicole Kersting) consists in the development and testing of a video-based measure of teacher knowledge.
