Biography
Dr. Gloria Roelen earned a Doctorate in Education Policy, Planning and
Administration from the University of Southern California, a Master of Arts Degree
in Education from California State University, Long Beach where she also earned a
Bachelor Degree in English/Spanish. Dr. Roelen has taught students all educational
levels . She began her teaching career as a pre-school teacher and supervisor for
the American Youth Organization on a U.S. army base in Augsburg, Germany. After a
year in Germany, she returned home to complete her secondary school credential and
secured a high school teaching position in the Norwalk-La Mirada School District
teaching Spanish and English. In addition to her high school level teaching
experience, Dr. Roelen taught Spanish at the intermediate school level in Garden
Grove. She later secured a position in Garden Grove as a District Bilingual
Resource Teacher mentoring and supporting elementary school teachers and their
linguistically and culturally diverse students.
Dr. Roelen served as an elementary school principal in the Santa Ana Unified School
District. After ten years of school site administration, she accepted a district
management position in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District where she is
currently the Director of the Second Language Department. In that position, she
directs and supervises the district's program for English Learners as well as the
School Readiness and Resource Center Project, the K-12 Two-Way Language Immersion
Program Grant, the Even Start Program, and other several state and federal funded
projects.
Dr. Roelen has written many grants for linguistically and culturally diverse
children. As a result of her efforts, she has been awarded over ten million dollars
in federal funds over the past twelve years to assist the Saddleback Valley Unified
School District with more innovative and effective educational practices for
minority language children and their families.
At the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Roelen has taught "Theories and Methods
of Second Language Acquisition". She has also taught education courses at Concordia
University and Saddleback College.
