Biography

Ying grew up in Sichuan, China. She received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English Literature from Sichuan University. She then moved to Seattle, Washington and earned a Master's degree in Special Education. Her specialization was Learning Disabilities. After completing her graduate program, Ying worked as a resource room teacher in an elementary school in suburban Seattle area.

She has been a language instructor as well as a language learner. While studying in China, she taught English courses to freshmen in the university and adult students in evening classes. While earning her Master's degree at the University of Washington, she taught First-Year Chinese in the Chinese program. Her experience as a language instructor has endowed her a new perspective to view the process of language acquisition and development. Many questions have arisen in her learning and teaching activities. She is eager to search for answers through her study at the University of California, Irvine.

Her research interests include technology use in language development, metacognition process, and motivation development. Upon completing her Ph.D. program, she plans to teach at the university level and continue her research on language and literacy development.

In her free time Ying enjoys reading, traveling, and watching movies.
