Sonja Lind is a Ph.D. student in Cohort 2 specializing in Language, Literacy and Technology. She has previously taught freshman writing and English as a second language at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and Sahmyook University in Seoul, South Korea. Sonja has integrated critical pedagogy and service-learning in her freshman writing classes and has also enjoyed tutoring students at the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at Cal Poly Pomona. In addition, Sonja has successfully integrated technology in her pedagogical approach and is looking forward to contributing to the development of further applications for technology in education. Her research interests include English language and international education, educational equity, new literacies, service-learning, rhetoric, instructional technology and online communities. Sonja's career goals encompass a lifetime of service where she plans to make a meaningful difference in the administration of English language institutes, international centers and the development of educational systems and technology for underserved communities.
In travel writer Pico Iyer's words, Sonja is a “global soul.” Cumulatively, she has lived in five continents and traveled to 42 countries. She was born in Norway, grew up in Kenya, and spent her teen years in Vancouver, B.C. and Boston. Sonja earned her bachelor's degree in English Literature at Newbold College in England, then went on to teach English as a foreign language in South Korea. She recently completed a Master's degree in English with emphases in TESL and Rhetoric/Composition at Cal Poly Pomona. Sonja has remained in southern California, where she feels that the international population uniquely suits her research interests.
Sonja has presented at TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and CIES (Comparative and International Education Society) conferences, and has also written for International Educator and Language Magazine. Her personal interests include traveling, photography, videography, reading, writing, swimming and cooking.
