PhD Student
Department of Education

Biography

Laurie Hansen will begin the PhD in Education program at UCI in fall 2007.  Her specialization will be Language, Literacy, and Technology which is in alignment with her research interests, which include: second language learning and literacy, content area instruction for English learners; technology; and preservice education.  UC Irvine offers a unique PhD program that presents the challenges and opportunities for growth Laurie is seeking.

Laurie began her teaching career in 1994 as an elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  There she taught English learners in grades 1-3.  She holds a current California Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) certificate.  It was while teaching in Huntington Park, CA that Laurie’s interest in English learners began.

Laurie earned a master’s degree in education from California State University Fullerton (CSUF).  While earning her degree, she worked part-time as a graduate assistant so that she could spend more time with her growing family.  In 1999 she graduated and became a part-time faculty member in the Department of Elementary & Bilingual Education at CSUF.  She supervised student teachers at schools throughout southern California and taught courses in education, such as Introduction to Elementary Education and Cultural Pluralism.

In 2001 Laurie became a full-time faculty member at CSUF and continued to supervise student teachers and teach courses such as Mathematics Methods, Science Methods, and Methods and Inquiry for Teaching English Learners.  In 2004 Laurie became the Program Coordinator for the Multiple Subject Credential Program in the Department of Elementary & Bilingual Education at CSUF.  Laurie is currently on a professional leave of absence from Cal State Fullerton so that she can pursue her doctoral studies.  Laurie’s career goals include research and publishing, and teaching at the university level as a tenure track professor.

Laurie lives in Placentia with her husband, their three children, and their English bulldog.
