Biography
All students should have educational opportunities that encourage them to exercise their imaginations and creativity, and to develop appreciation for their differences and similarities. Encounters with the visual and performing arts, facilitated by multimedia and information technologies, can enhance this process.
My work is informed by John Dewey's philosophies about democracy, the arts, and experiential learning, Maxine Green's ideas about the power of the imagination and the arts to develop empathy, Graeme Chalmers' work that celebrates pluralism through the arts, and Paulo Freire's teachings about equal opportunity in education, hope and praxis:
"To attempt to do without hope, which is based on the need for truth as an ethical quality of the struggle, is tantamount to denying that struggle one of its mainstays. The essential thing..is this: hope, as an ontological need, demands an anchoring in practice...Just to hope is to hope in vain." (Pedagogy Hope, 1994. pp 8-9)
My education background includes an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, in a joint UCI and UCLA program, an M.A. in Design at UCLA and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts at UCI, and both Secondary Teaching and Administrative Service credentials at UCI.
In 1975-1976 I spent a year as a Fulbright Foundation International Exchange Teacher at Saint Pauls' Secondary School in Sussex, England.
Prior to joining the UCI Department of Education faculty in 1987, I taught in the Irvine Unified School District, and worked in full-motion video teleconferencing, and other public and educational access cable television projects.
