Biography
My decision to pursue a career in education sprung from my personal, community, and academic experiences. As a first-generation college student, my educational pathway proved to be challenging and not a linear journey but it allowed me to realize my true educational and professional aspirations. My community involvement played a role in my decision to pursue a career in education. My involvement in the following organizations: AmeriCorps of Anaheim, Hermanas Unidas of Cal State Fullerton, Orange County Bar Foundation’s Higher Education Mentoring Program, and Cal State Fullerton’s Talent Search Program has allowed me carve my own space within the compounds of education, community and personal commitment. The idea that there is a notable disparity from the number of Chicano/Latino students that access higher education and the population demographics further empowered my decision.
My research interests and style demonstrated a strong fit with UCI’s professors and program in its mission of further understanding higher education and its role in society. My research interests include the study of diversity in higher education in regards to access, retainment and graduation, and education and social change.
As a Chicana from Santa Ana, I will start the Education doctorate program at UCI and continue my passion of having a continuous connection to my roots, community, and gente. In addition as a Southern California native, I enjoy spending time at the beach and taking yoga classes.
