Biography
Jacqueline D’warte completed her undergraduate studies and a Masters of Education at Sydney University. She has also undertaken postgraduate courses in TESOL at the University of Technology Sydney and is currently completing a PH.D in Urban Schooling at UCLA.
Ms D’warte has fifteen years of K-12 teaching experience in Australia, the United Kingdom, and India. She began her career as an elementary school teacher teaching a range of grades and specializing in ESL and Literacy development for least successful students. She has written and edited literacy materials for inclusion in professional development packages and curriculum documents for Australian Public Schools in her role as Consultant for the N.S.W. Disadvantaged Schools Program and the NSW State Literacy Strategy.
Ms D’warte continues to be extensively involved in both curriculum and staff development in the US working on interdisciplinary projects that involve developing language and literacy. Ms D’warte is faculty advisor for Literacy in the History Classroom a project that involves working with teachers in Santa Ana Unified School District to develop Academic Literacy in history. Ms D’warte also has a continuing role as a literacy consultant for the New York City Public Schools.
Ms D’warte teaches a range of literacy courses in the elementary and secondary credential program in the Department of Education. She coordinates the training and scoring of the UCI Single Subject Teaching Event developing and coordinating professional development in Academic Language for Credential Faculty and Advisors, conducting training and scoring of the secondary teaching event, and reviewing and revising the teaching event for implementation each year.
Ms D’warte primary research interest includes acquisition of Academic Literacy particularly the development of oral language as a bridge to high-level literacy for elementary and secondary students.
Courses Taught
Ed 329 Theories and Methods of English Language Development
Designed to prepare teachers for linguistically diverse environments. Emphasis is placed on knowledge and understanding of state policy regarding English language learners, including relevant legislation and standards. Knowledge and understanding of the main theoretical frameworks for teaching English language learners in K-12 context, and its application to state standards and theoretical frameworks in designing educational approaches at various subject areas and levels.
Ed 346 Reading and Writing in the Middle and High School Classrooms
Emphasis is placed upon understanding the literacy processes (listening, speaking, viewing, thinking, reading, and writing) as they relate to all Single Subject areas. Teachers are guided to integrate literacy-related strategies with curriculum-based goals supported in the California State Frameworks.
Ed 326 Curriculum and Methods for Elementary School Reading
Research-based instruction for delivering a comprehensive program aligned with the California English Language Arts content standards. Preparation to deliver systematic and explicit instruction in teaching reading and other literacy skills, including comprehension strategies, for all students. Significant field experience to design academic activities in literacy including experiences where beginning reading is taught.
Ed 50 Origins, Purpose, and Central Issues in K-12 Education
An introduction to the role of education in U.S. society and to central issues in K-12 education. Education is studied from four different perspectives: social, historical, philosophical, and political.
Ed 124 Multicultural Education in K-12 Schools
Analysis of educational needs and experiences of minority groups in the state and nation and related social, cultural, language, and economic issues. Examination of practices for fostering equity and for creating schools and classrooms that respond to the needs of diverse students
Research Projects
Personal Research Interests:
Acquisition of Academic Literacy focusing on oral language (English and L1) as a bridge to high-level school literacy for elementary and secondary students.
Discourse analysis of the oral language in the US history classroom identifying both teacher talk and student talk. Investigating the genres students read, write, talk about, and listen to in US History classrooms.
Investigating links between language and thought through facilitating classroom talk that showcases students and teachers talking their way into understanding around topics and text.
Using Action Research to address teacher’s expectations of second language, low SES learners. Assisting teachers in recognizing and utilizing student’s metalinguistic resources in the classroom.
Defining Transcultural Skills across a range of disciplines
