Bruce Baron

Biography
As our department’s Secondary History/Social Science Methods instructor for the last 10 years, Bruce brings to UCI’s Department of Education a wealth of public school educational experience. Having earned his BA in Comparative Cultures from UC Irvine with minors in English and Political Science, Bruce has also studied at UCLA and the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Bruce began his educational career through the National Teacher Corps program and subsequently taught at the elementary and secondary levels before earning his MS from Pepperdine University and becoming a school principal.
As a teacher, Bruce worked as one of California’s first mentor teachers in the area of critical thinking. He was later awarded a grant to pursue work in multicultural education by the California Educational Initiatives Fund and has acted in a consultant role for numerous district and county level entities on promoting inter-ethnic relations on school campuses. As a principal, Bruce’s schools have been awarded state-wide grants from the Pacific Telesis Foundation, the Wells Fargo Corporation, and through Senate Bill 1274. Additionally, both the elementary and middle schools where Bruce has been principal have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools.
Together with his wife, Christine, Bruce co-authored the parent resource trade paperback, What Did You Learn In School Today? which was simultaneously published by both Warner Books and the Consumer Reports Union. As one of the first education guides of its kind, the book received significant positive reviews from the The International Reading Association, The College Board, Numerous State PTAs, The National Institute of Education, The National Council on Basic Education, and The Editors of Consumer Reports Magazine.
In addition to his other work, Bruce has served as a member of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Board of Institutional Reviewers, has supported the integration of the work of the UCI California History/Social Science Project with the Department of Education and is currently working with a fellowship from the Freeman Foundation on Increasing the Awareness of Asia in Teacher Education.
