
Dr. William Watkins, Superintendent Emeritus of El Segundo Unified School District, visited Tim Tift's Education 50 Class: Origins, Purposes, and Central Issues in K–12 Education as a guest lecturer on Thursday, January 22.
During his discussion with students, Dr. Watkins reviewed issues of interest, power, and responsibility in education at the national, state, and local levels. Topics ranged from the 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson court case and 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka to establishment of the cabinet post of Secretary of Education within the Federal Department of Education (14th in line to president) and education funding at the local level.
Education 50 is one of the core course options for students seeking a Minor in Educational Studies. Dr. Watkin's visit was facilitated by Education 50 Peer Advisors Holly Smith and Robin Williams and Teaching Assistant Shelly VanAmburg.
