Abstract

An important component of teaching mathematics for understanding is getting students to communicate their mathematical ideas in the classroom. In this presentation, Dr. van Es will explore why it is important to establish a mathematics discourse community, present a framework for analyzing teaching in order to move toward creating a classroom environment where students share their thinking, and then discuss particular strategies teachers might use to help kids begin talking about mathematics.
