"Proudest Moments Come From Hearing How Successful Former Students Are"
Teachers of Tomorrow
Club Officers, Kevin Fairman, and Club Members

Kevin Fairman, Activities Director at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach, visited Teachers of Tomorrow to share his experiences advising high school students. A graduate of Edison High School, Mr. Fairman obtained a degree in business from Eastern Michigan and entered the teaching profession as a football coach. Currently, in addition to his position at Ocean View, he is President of the Orange County Activities Directors.

During his presentation, Mr. Fairman emphasized to the future teachers the importance of finding fulfillment in a profession. He cautioned that the first year or two of teaching can be difficult but difficulties can be mitigated by having another professional to talk with on a regular basis. He explained that a process should be in place: as new teachers are mentored and become more experienced in the classroom, they should serve as mentors to others coming into the profession. Referring to the benefits provided by BTSA (Beginning Teachers Support and Asssessment), Mr. Fairman confided that "there is nothing better than helping fellow teachers."

Mr. Fairman commended club members for engaging in activities during their college experience. He told members that it will be important, when they are teachers, to encourage their students to engage in school activities. Not only will the students enjoy their high school years more, but also they will develop important skills that will serve them personally as well as be of benefit for college admission and employment. He explained that the more versatility a job applicant for a teaching position brings to the table --e.g, experience with music, sports, public speaking, drama -- the better the chances of securing a position.

Mr. Fairman concluded his remarks by responding to questions from the audience.
