Chair Delivers 2009 State of the Department Address to Faculty, Staff, and Students

  • Berkeley Place was officially renamed the Education Building in Spring 2009. 
  • DoE grants for 2008-2009 have surpassed $14,000,000. New grants were awarded for research in math and science education, cognitive development, learning-related behaviors, video-based interventions, and teacher training. Granting agencies included the U.S. Department of Education Institute for Education Science, Gates Foundation, Spencer Foundation, and the National Science Foundation.
  • The average grant amount per faculty member rose from $114,000 in 2005-2006 to $671,685 in 2008-2009. As of October 1, 2009, faculty members have submitted proposals for an additional $17,600,000 in grant support.
  • Senate faculty number 21 with the arrival Associate Professor Judith Haymore Sandholtz from UC Riverside. Dr. Sandholtz's research interests encompass teacher professional development, teacher education, and school-university partnerships.
  • The average yearly publication rate per faculty member, 2006-2008, was 2.5 articles per year in journals such as Teachers College Record, Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Education Evaluation and Policy Analysis, American Journal of Public Health, American Journal of Sociology, Journal of Special Education, Review of Higher Education, and Journal of the Learning Sciences.
  • Senate faculty members assuming leadership positions in 2009 included: Greg Duncan as President of the Society for Research in Child Development, George Farkas as President of the Sociological Research Association and Fellow of AERA, and Professor Margaret Burchinal as Associate Editor of Child Development.
  • Faculty honors this past year included the 2009 Conference on English Education Richard A. Meade Award for Carol Booth Olson, the National Council for Teachers of English Alan C. Purves Award for Rebecca Black, UC Irvine University Teaching Award for Joseph Mahoney, and District Teacher of the Year award for Lecturer Kevin Dempsey.
  • Three visiting scholars are conducting research in the department: Inga Dóra Sigfúsdóttir  from Reykjavik University, Iceland; Vilson Leffa  from Catholic University of  Pelotas, Brazil; and Xiaohong Wang from Zhengzhou Training Institute, the People's Bank of China.
  • DoE has a 2009 graduate student enrollment of 345 in the Ph.D., Ed.D., MAT, and Credential programs.
  • DoE's Ph.D. program has admitted 16 new students in 2009, bringing the total number of enrolled Ph.D. students to 43. All students are being supported either by scholarship, fellowship, teaching associate or teaching assistant positions, graduate student researcher appointments, or teacher supervisor positions.
  • DoE's two Ed.D. programs graduated 21 Doctors of Education this past year.
  • Undergraduate enrollment in the UCI Minor in Education Studies increased 27% since 2005-2006. This past year, 16 undergraduates per quarter served as peer assistants; 54 served as undergraduate researchers on faculty grants; and 100 participated in the Cal TEACH Science-Math program.
  • In the Certificate of Afterschool Education program, 390 students completed 5000 hours of fieldwork at area school and other afterschool program sites.
  • UCI Writing Project, in addition to continuation of its $3M grant from the U.S. Department of Education, delivered for the 32nd year its internationally-recognized summer and academic year programs for teachers and youth.
