Scholarship Includes Studies of Reflections on Teaching and Learning

Assistant Professor Rossella Santagata will present at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference on April 20-22 in Washington, DC. The title of her paper is "The Design of a Framework for Guiding Teacher Analyses of Videotaped Lessons." Dr. Santagata studies Learning, Development, and Culture; Video and Teacher Learning; and Mathematics Teaching.

Abstract:

Although video is currently widely used in teacher professional development settings, little is known about effective ways to structure teachers’ viewing of videotaped instruction. This paper presents a viewing framework that the researcher has developed over time as she has engaged groups of teachers in the analysis of other teachers’ videotaped lessons and studied what they learned from these experiences. The framework is currently centered around reflection on teaching and learning as a cause-effect process, with instructional strategies and potential alternatives analyzed in terms of their impact on student learning. This paper will describe how the framework has changed over time to accomodate teachers’ needs and difficulties.
