Eight UCI Credential Students, selected for their dual-language proficiency, were given the honor of serving as interpreters at the recent CABE (California Association for Bilingual Education) Conference held February 25-28 in Long Beach. In return for their services, students are given complimentary admission to the conference and are able to attend workshops, the career fair, and vendor displays during their free time.
UCI Bilingual Coordinator Susan Guilfoyle administered the CABE selection process at UCI and facilitated practice sessions conducted by Santa Ana School District Interpreter Cesar Vargas, supervisor of the CABE interpreters.

Bilingual Authorization
At UCI students pursuing a bilingual authorization with their teaching credential are placed in a school where the instruction is primarily done in Spanish or a percentage of the day is taught in Spanish. Currently UCI’s five multiple subject (MS) credential candidates pursuing bilingual authorization have all been placed at dual immersion schools for their student teaching assignment. In addition to student teaching in a dual immersion school, the students must also pass the three subtests under the CTEL (California Teachers of English Learners): LOTE (Languages Other Than English) Spanish Examination. The three subtests are: III (Spanish Fluency), IV (Bilingual Methodology), and V (Latino Culture).
