During their 2009 End-of-Year Reception at the University Club, Cal
Teach administrators and staff thanked 69 Orange County and Los Angeles
mentor teachers for the support, encouragement, and inspiration they
provided to UC Irvine Cal Teach undergraduates apprenticing in their
classrooms during the 2008-2009 academic school year. The 69 teachers
represented six placement school districts: Los Angeles Unified School
Distsrict, Newport-Mesa School District, Saddleback Valley Unified
School District, Santa Ana Unified School District, Tustin Unified
School Distsrict, and Walnut Valley Unified School District.
UC Irvine Cal Teach
provides advising and support services, academic courses, and ongoing
pre-service teaching experiences with local K-12 teachers to UCI math
and science students who wish to learn about the profession of
teaching. Ninety-four UC Irvine undergradutes participated in Cal-Teach
this past year. Nine undergraduates completed the Cal Teach course
series during the year. Six graduating seniors have been admitted to
the UC Irvine Teacher Credential program: Tanvi Bhaskta, Nguyen Cao,
Alexandra Easton, Monica Helafi, Tracy Law, and Danielle Moncure.
The
recognition evening included a welcome by Jose Luis Ramirez, Manager of
Student Services; a mentor keynote address by Annie Kensinger of Taft
Elementary School; student keynote addresses by Nguyen Cao and Tracy
Law; a participatory activity led by Master Teachers Kris Houston and
Terry Shanahan; and recognition of 2008-2009 mentor teachers and Cal
Teach students.
