Director of Undergraduate Education Sue Marshall has announced that the California Science and Math Teach Program (Cal TEACH) is one of two UC Irvine service programs to receive AmeriCorps Education Awards from California Campus Compact, which has won a Learn & Serve America grant of more than $1 million. The California Teach Science & Math Program will receive three AmeriCorps Education Awards, and the UC Irvine Center for Service in Action will receive 24. Each AmeriCorps award is for a 300-hour service commitment to be completed within 12 months.

Cal TEACH will use the awards for internship placements with youth-serving nonprofits. The University of California launched the California Teach Science and Math Initiative in 2005 in response to the critical shortage of qualified middle school and high school math and science teachers throughout the state. The initiative's strategies are to: a) offer undergraduates opportunities to explore math and science teaching as a career option; and b) offer degree program options that combine a bachelor's degree in math, the sciences, or a related discipline with teacher education coursework.
