Since 1993, the UC Irvine Department of Education has offered a highly successful Ed.D. Program in cooperation with the University of California, Los Angeles. The UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration was designed for employed professionals who demonstrated potential for leadership in school administration, educational policy, and fields pertinent to school practice and educational scholarship. Students entered the program from a range of professions, including K-12 and higher education teaching and administration, out-of-school learning, school counseling, after school programming, and educational policy.
Courses offered in the program canvassed research methodology, educational reform, organizational theory, cognition, and leadership. Students enrolled for 8 units of course work during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters over a three year period and 12 units of course work for four consecutive summers.
Enhancements to coursework included summer retreats, colloquia, and other academic activities in support of doctoral studies. Student achievements encompassed collaboration with faculty on research, presentation at conferences, co-publication with faculty, and independent publication of articles stemming from dissertation and other research.
Dissertation research topics have examined a full spectrum of issues in education. Notable areas of study include high stakes testing, characteristics of successful schools, effects of accommodations on standardized test scores for special needs and ELL students, the impact of arts in education, and dynamics of charter schools.
Participation in the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. has promoted professional development and resulted in career advancements, including appointment to university teaching positions, to district level administration, and to state policy positions. Alumni and student employment rates hover at 96% and span work in K-12 administration, K-12 district level positions, higher education, State level policy-making, and as teacher leaders.
Since our first graduate completed her degree in 1997, 50 students have earned their Ed.D. in Educational Administration and 38 are working to complete their dissertations.
