Students who completed a CASE course prior to Fall 2008 may use it to satisfy the relevant certificate program course requirement; however, they must complete an additional minimum 20 hours of after-school program fieldwork related to the curriculum subject area of the course. Consult the course instructor for information about completing the fieldwork by enrolling in EDUC 160L “After-school Program Fieldwork” for 1 unit.
An exception is EDUC 160 “Foundations of out-of-school Learning” that must show an enrollment of Fall 2008 or more recent to count towards the certificate.
Ideally, all students in CASE course electives who want a certificate will complete their fieldwork at a CASE partner after-school program. Consult with the instructor for a list of CASE-approved sites. This is the best thing for the program, it will allow students in the class to have shared program experiences and thereby enrich class discussions, it will facilitate efforts to evaluate a coherent educational program, and it is important for scheduling and tracking fieldwork.
We also recognize that a few students will have commitments that may preclude them from completing all of the required fieldwork at a CASE site (e.g., they work at another after-school program). In instances where a student is able to complete less than the required amount fieldwork at a CASE site they must file a petition for alternative fieldwork. The fieldwork petition is available in the Student Affairs office. Faculty members of the CASE Steering Committee will decide whether the alternate program is permissible on a student by student basis.
The Certificate is focused on after-school education and students are expected to complete fieldwork at after-school programs. In very rare instances, students who are unable to complete fieldwork at an after-school program but could participate in an appropriate, related setting (e.g., a before-school program, weekend program) can file a petition for alternative fieldwork. The fieldwork petition is available in the Student Affairs office. Faculty members of the CASE Steering Committee will decide whether the alternate program is permissible on a student by student basis.
The Certificate is designed to provide students with a breadth of knowledge in after-school education and programming skills. Accordingly, students may not count more than one course in a sequence towards the Certificate. For example, if a student completes both 122A and 122B, only one of these courses will count towards fulfilling the elective requirements. Similarly, beginning fall 2009, only one course per content area will count towards the Certificate. Current content areas include: art, mathematics, sports/physical and health education, technology, and literacy.
