Prospective Mentor Teachers

We are looking for science and math teachers willing to share their classrooms, expertise and passion with our students. We currently place students majoring in math, science, computer science or engineering in pre-service teaching placements in K-12 classrooms in local school districts. A mentor teacher’s classroom is typically one where students are active learners and research-based methods are incorporated into instruction.

As a Mentor Teacher, we ask that you:

  • Attend a Meet & Greet session at the outset of the quarter
  • Share your philosophy on teaching, specific to science and/or math
  • Provide background information on your school, grade level, district and community
  • Provide ongoing constructive criticism to your Cal Teach student
  • Contact the Cal Teach staff immediately if any issues arise
  • Complete an evaluation of the Cal Teach student at the conclusion of the quarter

As a Mentor Teacher, we ask that you allow the Cal Teach student to perform a variety of tasks while in your classroom, including:

  • Preparing materials for activities
  • Monitoring or assisting students in investigation and/or group work
  • Tutoring individuals or small groups
  • Grading papers, taking role and assisting in various classroom routines
  • Completing other assigned tasks
  • Allow the student to co-present one lesson per quarter

Mentor Teachers receive a stipend for the guidance and energy provided to our undergraduates and the Cal Teach program. If you are interested in hosting a Cal Teach student in your classroom, please contact our Placement Coordinator Karajean Hyde with your questions.
