CAL TEACH SCIENCE AND MATH UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM<
4-Year Undergraduate Option: Earn a Bachelor's Degree Plus Teaching Credential in Four Years
UCI undergraduates enroll in degree programs leading to a bachelor's degree and a single subject math or science teaching credential in four years.
In the School of Biological Sciences:
- B.A. in Biology/Education and a teaching credential
In the School of Physical Sciences:
- B.S. in Chemistry with a Secondary Education Concentration and a teaching credential
- B.S. in Earth and Environmental Sciences with a Secondary Education Concentration and a teaching credential
- B.S. in Mathematics with a Specialization in Secondary Education and a teaching credential
- B.S. in Physics with a Secondary Education Concentration and a teaching credential
Benefits: UCI students are ready to start a teaching career as soon as they graduate. Most other teacher credential programs in the state require an additional year of coursework after a candidate has graduated with his/her bachelor's degree.
For more information about these degree programs, visit an academic counselor for the School of Biological Sciences or School of Physical Sciences, or the Cal Teach Resource and Advising Center.
4 + 1 Year Option: Early Start on Teacher Preparation Coursework During the Undergraduate Years PLUS One Extra Year to Complete the Teaching Credential
While completing any math, science, or technical major, UCI undergraduates take selected courses, including an introduction to math and science teaching, that will provide a head start on preparing to be a middle school or high school science or math teacher. After graduating with their bachelor's degree, they enroll in a yearlong post-baccalaureate teaching credential program that includes the remaining courses and apprentice teaching.
Benefits: UCI students who decide late in their undergraduate years to pursue a teaching career can still explore if teaching is for them and get an early start on some coursework.
For more information about the 4+1 year option and early start courses, contact the Cal Teach Resource & Advising Center.
