Gisela Verduzco, Counselor for the Department of Education Undergraduate Minor in Educational Studies, has received the Janet Loxley Friend of the Middle Earth Award for her outstanding support and friendship to the residents of the Middle Earth Misty Mountain Theme House: "Changing the Future Through Education".
The Middle Earth Theme House is one of two education theme houses sponsored jointly by DoE and the Center for Educational Partnerships. Changing the Future Through Education is open to any freshman interested in learning about the field of education. During the year residents enjoy a supportive living and learning community while exploring education issues and careers and participating in program activities with faculty and K-12 educators. The environment of an education theme home is designed to develop students' teamwork, leadership, and public speaking skills through a variety of on- and off-campus activities.
In informing Ms. Verduzco of her award, Middle Earth Housing Student Development Coordinator Rachel Holland wrote:
Over that past few years you have worked incredibly hard to help us develop our teaching themed hall and get the residents more involved in pursuing a future in education. Misty Mountain is one of our most successful themed halls, and it would not have been possible without you and all of your efforts. For all of the work you have done with Middle Earth, the staff members voted unanimously to recognize you as our 2010-2011 Janet Loxley Award Winner!
Ms. Verduzco was honored during May 20th Middle Earth Awards Ceremony held at Buckleberry Hall.
