Davis Magnet Elementary School in Costa Mesa hosted the 2011 Winter Quarter Orientation for Department of Education Multiple Subject teacher credential candidates, UC Irvine mentor teachers, and credential program University Supervisors on January 5th.
The Multiple Subject Teacher Credential Program, one of three teacher preparation programs offered by the UCI Department of Education, is a full-time, three quarter program for people seeking careers as elementary school teachers in California, typically kindergarten through 6th grade.
The January 5th orientation at Davis provided teacher candidates with an overview of their forthcoming student teaching experience and an opportunity to meet with their supervisor, who will observe them at least three times during the quarter. As part of the orientation each student teacher and supervisor set up norms and discussed goals for the quarter:
During the afternoon Multiple Subject Coordinator Giguiere met with the program's mentor teachers. Included in the discussion of program requirements and student goals were issues of student support, ideas for engaging in reflective conversations, suggestions for supporting struggling student teachers, and requirements of the Teaching Event, which is the performance assessment the candidates must pass sucessfully in order to earn their teaching credential. The mentor teachers also were encouraged to help their student teachers select a learning segment in math and provide a flexible environment for them to teach the math lesson according to the rubric.
