On May 26 and 27, DoE sponsored a two-day Comprehension Camp for K-3 teachers at partner school Davis Magnet Elementary School in Costa Mesa.
Leading the training were teachers Leslie Whitaker, Karen Gauthier, Amy Adams, and Jody Guarino from Chaparral Elementary.
While Davis K-3 teachers were participating in the Comprehension Camp, student teachers from the Department of Education's Multiple Subject Teacher Credential Program led regular classroom instruction.
During the training, grade levels teams worked collaboratively to develop instructional plans that would lead to further grade level and inter-grade level articulation.
Specific objectives for teachers attending the Comprehension Camp were drawn from recommendations by Debbie Miller in Reading with Meaningr:
At the conclusion of the camp, Multiple Subject Coordinator Christina Giguiere commented:
Our collaboration with Davis Magnet School and Chaparral Elementary is a wonderful example of the mutual benefit that comes for partnering with our local schools. Our teacher preparation program benefits from direct engagement at the school site. At the same time, we facilitate dissemination of information and provide classroom support that enables teachers to pursue extended professional development opportunities such as the Comprehension Camp.
