  • Joseph Llamas, CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, CSU Los Angeles Urban Educational Leadership emphasis, successfully defended his dissertation on November 29 at UC Irvine. His dissertation was titled The Perception Gap: Sociodemographic Factors Affecting Teacher Perceptions of Students in Urban Schools. Members of his committee included Dr. Deborah Oh (Chair) and Dr. Ruth Johnson of CSULA and Dr. Estela Zarate (UCI Primary Reader) and Dr. Cynthia Feliciano of UC Irvine. Dr. Llamas is the Technology Coordinator at Susan Miller Dorsey High School in Los Angeles.

  • Maria Parente, Ph.D. in Education, successfully defended her dissertation on November 18. Dr. Parente's dissertation was titled A Person-Context Assessment of the Prevalence and Associated Social-Academic Outcomes of Self-Care for Children and Adolescents. Her dissertation chair was Dr. Joseph Mahoney. Dr. Parente was a member of the 14-member inaugural class of the UC Irvine Ph.D. in Education program, joining the program in Fall 2007. She currently is working at Yale University's Office of New Haven and State Affairs.

  • Laurie Hansen, Ph.D. in Education, has been invited to participate as a Subject Matter Advisory Panel member at the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): Multiple Subjects: Reading, Language, and Literature Item Review Conference to be held on December 14-15 in Sacramento. The primary purpose of this conference is to review draft test materials, including multiple-choice and constructed-response items for the CSET. Panel members are reimbursed for travel, airfare, hotel, and meal expenses.

  • Jenel Prenovost, 2001 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, presented with Ph.D. in Education students Tracy Bennett and Anamarie Auger at the recent California Educational Research Association's 90th Conference. The title of their presentation was "Applying Lessons Learned from Research and Evaluation: Successes and Challenges from California's Largest Afterschool Provider. Dr. Prenovost is Director of Evaluation for THINK Together in Sana Ana, the largest provider of state-funded afterschool programs in California.

  • The Los Angeles County Office of Education, Instructional Technology Division overseen by Raymond Chavez, Ed.D., 2010 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Educational Technology Leadership emphasis, recently hosted their Fifth Annual 21st Century Learners Symposium. Over 600 educators were given opportunities to learn about the latest technology trends and innovations and gain hands-on experiences working with the technologies. KTLA Los Angeles produced a feature on the symposium: "Education Becoming High Tech." For his dissertation research Dr. Chavez studied effective teacher practices in the use of handheld computers.

  • Meri Beckham, Ed.D., 2009 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Community College and Higher Education emphasis, has accepted a position as full-time lecturer at California State University, Fullerton in their graduate program in Educational Leadership. Previously Dr. Beckham was Adjunct Counselor for Nursing at the College of the Canyons. Her dissertation work explored unconventional learning: how perceiving students succeed in college.

  • Rick Rams, Ed.D., 2009 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Community College and Higher Education Emphasis, presented his doctoral research findings during Foothill College's Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) Research Symposium on October 31. The title of his presentation was "Black Ice: How African American EOPS Students Experience the Academic Storm at a California Community College." The October 31 symposium was the first in Foothill College's two-part research series looking at the literature related to underrepresented students in terms of persistence theory, achievement gap, critical race theory, and retention strategies. 

  • Sylvia Angulo, Ed.D., 2010 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, K-12 Instructional Leadership emphasis, has renewed her National Board Certification. Renewal requires demonstrating comprehensive professional growth in a variety of areas over time. Dr. Angulo earned her original certification in 2001. Her dissertation work studied the perceptions of student learning and pedagogy related to mathematics of National Board Certified teachers of urban Latino students.

  • Ph.D. Alumna Laurie Hansen is presenting at the California Council on Teacher Education (CCTE) Conference in San Diego, October 15-17. The title of her presentation is "Language Minority Children’s Growth in Vocabulary Knowledge and Literacy Skills." Abstract: This study examined differences in vocabulary and literacy growth between native English-speaking, limited English proficient, and fluent English proficient children. By fourth grade, native- and fluent-English speaking children showed similar performance on all measures. Limited English proficient students had average word reading and decoding skills, limited vocabulary knowledge, and weak comprehension skills. However, they made significant growth on all measures except comprehension. Policy implications for categorizing English learners and analyzing their achievement data are discussed.

  • Alumnus Vince Carbino had the pleasure of announcing at the recent Wilson-Lincoln Community Adult School Back to School meeting that the school will be receiving a $15,000 gift from the Counsel General of México to assist students with the cost of their GED examination. Unbeknownst to Dr. Carbino, a close friend to the Assistant Counsel General of México was present when Dr. Carbino spoke to last spring’s Lincoln Heights Chamber of Commerce luncheon about the economic barriers that students were encountering as they attempted to complete their secondary education. Subsequently, Dr. Carbino was contacted that the Counsel General wished to support the graduation aspirations of the Adult School students. Dr. Carbino, a former police officer, is the principal of Wilson-Lincoln Community Adult School, Division of Adult and Career Education, Los Angeles Unified School District. He received his doctorate from the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Urban Educational Leadership Emphasis.

  • Alumnus Chris Weber, Ed.D., 2005 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, announces publication of his third book, Simplifying Response to Intervention, written in collaboration with with Mike Mattos and Austin Buffum.

  • Dr. Laurie Hansen successfully defended her dissertation on August 8. Her dissertation was entitled Patterns of Independent Reading, Vocabulary Knowledge, and Literacy Skills Among English-Only, Limited-English Proficient, and Fluent-English Proficient Children. Dr. Hansen, who pursued the Language, Literacy, and Technology specialization, is the first graduate of UC Irvine's Ph.D. in Education program, which was introduced in 2007. Members of the dissertation committee were Professor George Farkas,  Dissertator Laurie Hansen, Associate Professor Penny Collins (Committee Chair/Advisor), and Professor Michael E. Martinez.   • Dr. Xiaoqing Chen successfully defended her dissertation on August 9. Her dissertation was entitled Developmental Challenges Experienced by Three Successful Private Higher Education Institutions in the People's Republic of China: A Case Study. Dr. Chen's research encompassed 40 interviews with administrators, instructors, and student focus groups in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an. Dr. Chen received her degree as a member of Cohort 10 of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration. Members of her dissertation committee were Dr. Chuansheng Chen, Dr. Liane Brouillette, and Dr. John Hawkins from UCLA.  Announcement

  • Dr. Karen Neitzel successfully defended her dissertation on August 18. Her dissertation was entitled Latina College Persistence: What Factors Affected the Persistence of First Generation Latinas who Attended Single Sex Secondary Schools? For her research Dr. Neitzel studied eight first generation Latina students who attended The Archer School for Girls and the Marlborough School in Los Angeles. Dr. Neitzel received her degree as a member of Cohort 9 of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration. Members of her committee included Professor Michael E. Martinez, Professor Ann DeVaney, and Dr. Linda Sax (UCLA member). Announcement

  • Dr. Jeneen Graham successfully defended her dissertation on August 19. Her dissertation was entitled Elements of Human Effectiveness: Intelligences, Traits, and Abilities That Lead to Success and Fulfillment in Life. Her research was an empirical study of how a variety of individual difference factors can predict the effectiveness of high school students (on academic outcomes) and entrepreneurs (on business success) as well as on life satisfaction. Dr. Graham is a member of Cohort 9 of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration. Her committee members were Dr. Michael E. Martinez, Chair/Advisor, Dr. Margaret Burchinal, and Dr. James Catterall (UCLA member).  Announcement

  • Dr. Monica Colunga successfully defended her dissertation on August 23. Her dissertation was entitled Professional Learning Communities: A Closer Look. To investigate the development of PLCs among secondary mathematics teachers, Dr. Colunga analyzed data collected from 92 teachers over a two year period. Her research suggests that shared knowledge, common agreements, and collective inquiry form the theoretical core of PLC functioning. Dr. Colunga is a member of Cohort 8 of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration. Members of her dissertation committee were Dr. AnneMarie Conley, Chair/Advisor, Dr. Carol Booth Olson, Co-Chair, and Dr. Megan Franke (UCLA).  Announcement

  • Dr. Michael Grove successfully defended his dissertation on August 24. His dissertation was entitled Assessing the Impact of Lesson Study on the Instructional Practice of Middle School Science Teachers. His research findings showed that participation in lesson study did create changes in teacher understanding of how students learned a particular set of skills and how instruction impacted student learning in this domain. Dr. Grove, a member of Cohort 8, is the final student to graduate from the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. program in Educational Administration.   • Dr. Mario Valente successfully defended his dissertation on August 25. His dissertation was entitled Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: Assessment of Risk Factors by California Community College Leaders. Dr. Valente is a member of Cohort 3 in the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. Program in Educational Administration and Leadership, California Polytechnic University, Pomona emphasis in Educational Technology Leadership.   • Alumnus Chris Weber, Ed.D., 2005 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, has published his second book, Pyramid of Behavior Interventions, with colleagues Tom Hierck and Charlie Coleman. Dr. Weber communicated that his previous publication, Pyramid Response to Intervention (with Mike Mattos and Austin Buffum), has been identified as the best-selling RTI (Response to Intervention) book in North America.

  • Alumna Akemi Morioka, Ed.D., is Associate Professor of Japanese Language Instruction at Okayama University Language Education Center in Japan. Previously, Dr. Morioka was Academic Coordinator of the Japanese Language Program in the Department of Humanities, UC Irvine. She received her doctorate in Educational Administration in 2007 from the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. program. Her dissertation was entitled Teaching Japanese with Content-Based Instruction.

  • Alumnus Vince Carbino, graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Urban Educational Leadership Emphasis, has been honored by the Los Angeles Unified School District Police Department Chief of Police for his work and research in school safety. His commemorative plaque is inscribed: "In appreciation for your partnership with the men and women of the Los Angeles School Police Department and in support of Safe Schools." Dr. Carbino, a former police officer, is the principal of Wilson-Lincoln Community Adult School, Division of Adult and Career Education, Los Angeles Unified School District. Considering his award, Dr. Carbino commented, "This was kind of full circle for me, from a beat cop to the researcher presenting to beat cops, or as the police chief said, '...from officer to doctor'." Dr. Carbino's dissertation was entitled You Can Hide, Watch, or Run, but You Better Not Snitch: A Study of Student Perceptions of School Safety at an Urban High School.

  • Alumna Lilia Tanakeyowma, Ed.D., is presenting at the 16th Annual National Community College Hispanic Council (NCCHC) Leadership Symposium in San Antonio, Texas, September 22-23. Her presentation discusses the very successful Padres Promotores de la Educación program now in its 10th year of operations by the Santa Ana Partnership, an innovative partnership approach between K-12 and higher education to outreach secondary school parents with information to ensure their children's success in high school and early preparation for college. Dr. Tanakeyowma explained, "Promotores uses a non-traditional approach to reaching out to the mostly immigrant Spanish-speaking families served by the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD). They conduct home visits and hold pláticas (community dialogues) in apartment complexes, parks, churches, and community centers throughout the city. The program reaches over 20,000 families each year. Participating parents have developed their own curriculum with basic lessons that help Latino families understand the complex steps to help prepare their children to successfully reach college." The National Community College Hispanic Council (NCCHC) is a premier organization for Hispanic leadership development in community colleges with a mission to increase the number of successful Hispanic leaders in America's community colleges through leadership development.

  • Alumnus Keith Curry, Ed.D., has established a annual $1,000 scholarship for students pursuing a Ph.D. in Education at UC Irvine. Dr. Curry, a 2011 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, is the Interim CEO of the Compton Community College District.

  • Alumna Kim Burge, Ed.D., 1999 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, served as guest editor for the online Journal for Learning Through the Arts, a peer-reviewed publication of the UCI Center for Learning in the Arts, Sciences and Sustainability.

  • Alumna Meri Beckham, Ed.D., has been awarded the Isabel Briggs Myers Memorial Research Award from the Association for Psychological Type International, during an August 2011 ceremoney at the biennial international conference. Dr. Beckham received her Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership in 2009 with an emphasis in Higher Education and Community College Leadership. Her dissertation was entitled Unconventional Learning: How Perceiving Students Succeed in College.   • Alumna Samira Habash, Ed.D., 2010 graduate of the  CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Higher Education and Community College Leadership Emphasis, has accepted the position of Department Chair of the Department of Speech and Communication at Long Beach City College. Dr. Habash's dissertation was entitled Exploring the Relationship Between Perceived Teacher Nonverbal Immediacy and Perceived Teacher Misbehaviors on Student Course Retention in Urban Community Colleges.

  • An article by Alumnus Dr. Matais Pouncil, 2009 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Administration and Leadership, Higher Education and Community College Emphasis, has been published in iJournal: Insight into Student Services: "Transfer Success Stories: Themes, Patterns, and Connections". Abstract: This article suggests ways in which colleges can institutionalize strategies to ensure transfer success, or ways in which college professionals can interact with and support students who will transfer. The article tells the story of three students at Foothill College, who have successfully transferred, and the factors that contributed to their successful transfer process. The strategies are highlighted and can be generalized to other students, or to other colleges. Article and Photograph
  • Dr. Reginald Sample, 2009 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Administration and Leadership, Urban Educational Leadership Emphasis, has been notified by PROQUEST that he will be receiving royalities for publication of his dissertation: "A Case of Black Male: The Overrepresentation of African American Males in Special Education as Emotionally Disturbed (ED)." Dr. Sample is prinicpal at Susan Miller Dorsey High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. More about Dr. Sample.

  • Congratulations to new alumna Fredricka Brown, Ed.D. Dr. Brown received her degree this spring from the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, CSULA Urban Educational Leadership Emphasis. Dr. Brown's dissertation was entitled: "Getting It Right: Inner-City Parents, School Involvement, and Student Academic Achievement." Upon receiving her degree, Dr. Brown commented, “The CSULA/UC Irvine Joint Doctoral Program provided the academic and scholarly approach for a diverse doctoral program experience, where I received the cultural and knowledge foundation that explored the educational leadership of urban communities. The opportunity to absorb the expertise of professors who were well versed in transformational leadership in urban communities was priceless.” Dr. Brown has taught in the Compton Unified School District for many years, working as secondary teacher, language arts curriculum specialist, and principal. Her diverse academic background includes facilitating school and district staff development workshops, developing district-wide instructional guides, supervising a dual immersion program, and working with school tutorial program. Her goal is to develop parent involvement programs in inner-city schools that will promote better working relationships between parents and school educators, in order to promote higher student achievement among the students these communities serve.   • Congratulations to new alumnus Keith Curry, Ed.D. Dr. Curry received his degree this spring from the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration. His dissertation was entitled: The Deaccreditation of Compton Community College: An Interpretation Through the Kubler-Ross Grief Construct.   • Dr. Nancy Watkins, graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Education Administration and Leadership with an emphasis in K-12 Instructional Leadership, has been reappointed to the Committee on Accreditation (COA) by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing at their April 14-15, 2011 meeting. Dr. Watkins and two new members – Kenneth Lopour and Deborah Erickson – were selected from the finalist pool of six and will serve on the Commission from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2015. In selecting members the Commission takes into consideration such variables as geographic, academic, and professional sector representation in order to best represent California’s diverse learning community. Dr. Watkins, who hails from Yorba Linda, was first appointed to the COA in August 2007 and served two 1-year terms as co-chair. In addition to her Doctorate, Dr. Watkins holds a Master of Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University, a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of California, Santa Barbara, and a teaching credential from San Francisco State University. She currently teaches Educational Policy and Governance and serves as a writing coach in the Educational Leadership Department at California State University, Fullerton and was recently appointed to the Aspiring Leaders Program in Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (CTC Press Release).   • Dr. Karen Brzoska, graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership with an emphasis in Educational Technology Leadership, has been promoted to the position of Director of MediaVision in the Instructional and Information Technology Division at Cal Poly Pomona. MediaVision is a dynamic organization dedicate to partnering with a range of university stakeholders to produce engaging, high-quality digital video and audio materials that further the educational mission of Cal Poly Pomona. MediaVision recently received the Silver Award of Excellence, presented by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, for the video "This is Cal Poly Pomona." Read more about Dr. Brzoska.

  • Dr. Vince Carbino, graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Urban Educational Leadership Emphasis, had a summary of his 2010 dissertation research published in the March 28, 2011 edition of EdCal in an article entitled: "School Safety Planning Could Benefit from Student Inclusion."   • Dr. Gail Miller, UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, has joined the ranks of DoE Alumni with successful defense of her dissertation on March 30, 2011. Dr. Miller's dissertation is entitled: "Sustaining Comprehensive Teacher Development:  An Examination of the Extent to Which Teachers Continue to Implement a Cognitive Strategies Approach to Literacy Instruction One Year After Completion of a Professional Development Program." Dr. Miller currently teaches second grade in the Irvine Unified School District.

  • Dr. Arnett Carl Duncan, CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. graduate, will be presenting at the 2011 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Conference in New Orleans. The title of his presentation is: "Doing My Thing, My Way, For My Purpose: Hip Hop and African American Student Engagement." Summary of Presentation

  • Dr. Lilia Tanakeyowma, UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. graduate, will be presenting at the 2011 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Conference in New Orleans on April 9. Dr. Tanakeyowma is participating in the morning roundtable session Factors Impacting Latina/o Youth's Education Success. The title of her presentation is "Social Engagement Among Immigrant and Nonimmigrant Youth: Mexican Descent Youth in a California High School." In the afternoon, Dr. Tanakeyowma and Sylvia Swigert from UCI's Center for Educational Partnerships are participating in the roundtable session Assessing the Influence of Programs to Prepare At-Risk Students for College: Evaluating GEAR UP. Their presentation is entitled "Saturday Math Academy: Impact of a Supplemental Math Strategy for Low-Performing Middle School Students."

  • Dr. Feliza Ortiz-Ricon, along with some of her students, will be leading an interactive seminar-style workshop at the 22nd Annual National Youth Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, April 6-9. Her presentation, entitled "Mi Voz/My Voice: Engaging Youth in Culturally Relevant Service-Learning," will be part of the session Civic Contributions.

  • Katherine Dualan, alumna of the UCI Master of Arts in Teaching, has been identified a Teacher of Promise by the Irvine Unified School District. Ms. Dualan teaches English at University High School in Irvine.

  • Terry Walker, graduate of the UCI Intern Program and the UCI Master of Arts in Educational Technology, has been appointed Superintendent of the Irvine Unified School District.
  • Dr. Sharyn Sigler has joined the ranks of DoE alumni. She defended her dissertation: "A Community Building Process Among Young Learners in a Virtual Collaborative Environment" on February 28, 2011, at UC Irvine. Dr. Sigler pursued her doctorate in the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. program, Educational Technology Leadership emphasis (UCI and Cal Poly Pomona). She teaches 5th grade at Oswalt Academy in the Rowland Unified School District.

  • Dr. Chris Weber has accepted a full-time position with Chicago Public Schools. Dr. Weber is a graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. program in Educational Administration.   • On February 24, 2011, CSU/UCI Ed.D. alumnus Dr. Richard Rams, Dean of Student Support Services at Cypress College, moderated a media roundtable event featuring media representatives, legislative officials, and students at the California Community Colleges System Office in Sacramento, California. The event was being held in support of the California Community Colleges I Can Afford College financial aid awareness campaign. The campaign goal is to inform current and prospective students that financial aid is available year-round at California's 112 community colleges to help current and prospective students pay for fees, books, and supplies, and sometimes even help with the rent. Bloggers, newpapers, and various media outlets covered the event.

  • Elementary School teacher Jeannine Thomas, 2009 graduate of the UC Irvine Teacher Credential Program, published her first children's book in a series. Entitled Nutter the Survivor, the text champions pet adoption and animal rescue. Article

  • Dr. Keith Tuominen has accepted a new position as Director of Education for the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD). Previously, Dr. Tuominen was Principal of Venado Middle School. He has been with IUSD for six years. In his new role, Dr. Tuominen will be working with middle and high schools in their continuous improvement goals. Dr. Tuominen received his doctorate in Educational Administration from the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in 2008. His dissertation was entitled Formative Assessment and Collaborative Teaming with Support Involving Middle School Mathematics Teachers.

  • Dr. Bernice Tabak Kirzner has accepted a position at the Epstein School in Atlanta as the new Associate Head of School effective August 1, 2011. Dr. Kirzner, who received her doctorate from the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration in 2010, currently is the Head of School at Austin (Texas) Jewish Academy.   • Dr. Reginald Sample, 2009 graduate from the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Urban Educational Leadership Specialization, was featured in the Los Angeles Sentinel (December 30, 2010) for hosting a holiday toy drive for students with sickle cell anemia.  Dr. Sample, Principal of Susan Miller Dorsey High School (Los Angeles Unified School District), partnered with Dorsey students, the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority for the event.   • Marie Nubia-Feliciano, Department of Education Admissions Officer, will be presenting at the March 2-4 District 9 Conference of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).   • Nancy Watkins, Ed.D., is the new Writing Coach for CSU Fullerton's Educational Leadership Department. Dr. Watkins is a 2008 graduate from the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, K-12 Instructional Leadership Emphasis.   • Vince Carbino, Ed.D., is the new principal of the Wilson Lincoln Community Adult School, which has 60 sites and serves downtown Los Angeles to El Monte. Additionally, Dr. Carbino has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Lincoln Heights Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Carbino is a 2010 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership, Urban Educational Leadership Emphasis. His dissertation was entitled: You Can Hide, Watch, or Run But You Better Not Snitch: A Study of Student Perceptions of School Safety at an Urban High School
  • Anne Jones, Ed.D., 2009 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, has accepted an advancement to the position of Assistant Dean, Academic Programs and Student Affairs, UC Riverside Graduate School of Education. Previously Dr Jones was Director of Teacher Education at UCR.

  • Congratulations to new alumna Dr. Pamela McFadden, who successfully defended her dissertation "Using Theater Arts to Enhance Literacy Skills at the Second Grade Level" on November 9, 2010.

  • Lilia Tanakeyowma, Ed.D., 2009 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Education Administration, will be presenting at the 2011 American Educational Research Association (AERA) meeting, to be held in New Orleans, April 8-12. Dr. Tanakeyowma's paper, "School Engagement Among Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Youth: Mexican Descent Youth in a California High School", will be part of the Roundtable Discussion Factors Impacting Latina/o Youth's Educational Success. Dr. Tanakeyowma is the Dean of Student Affairs at Santa Ana College.

  • Ron Richardson, Ed.D., 2009 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, presented at the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Convention in New Orleans, October 28-31. The convention theme was Building Bridges: Politics, Partnership, and the Purpose of Schooling. Dr. Richardson's presentation was entitled "Awakening Geopolitical Awareness Among 8th Graders". He is Principal of Madrona Middle School in the Torrance Unified School District.

  • Arnett Carl Duncan, Ed.D., 2010 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration, Urban Educational Leadership emphasis, will be presenting at the 2011 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Convention in New Orleans April 8-12. The 2011 conference theme is Inciting the Social Imagination: Education Research for the Public Good. Dr. Duncan's paper is entitled "Doing My Thing, My Way, For My Purpose: Hip Hop and African American Student Engagement". Dr. Duncan teaches United States history, psychology, and sociology at Wilmer Amina Carter High School in Rialto. He is the Executive Director of Kweli Educational Enterprises, Inc.   • Silke Bradford, Ed.D., 2010 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration, Urban Educational Leadership emphasis, is the new Assistant Principal at Amino Venice Charter High School in Venice. Amino Venice Charter is a Green Dot Public School (Green Dot Schools were featured briefly in the movie Waiting for Superman). This past summer Dr. Bradford represented the Program Evaluation and Research Center (PERC) Office of CSU Los Angeles as a featured speakers at the Maternal and Children's Health Bureau in Washington, D.C.

  • UC Irvine Researchers Kimberly Burge, Ed.D., 1999 graduate of the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. in Educational Administration, and Nancy Christensen, Ed.D., 2001 graduate of the same program, traveled to Cuba in August as members of the Common Ground Education Exchange program. Dr. Burge focused on the presence of art in Cuban life, and Dr. Christensen observed community engagement. Article: "Culture and Community Engagement in Cuba: All for the Revolution!"

  • Reginald Sample, Ed.D., 2009 graduate of the CSU/UCI Joint Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration, Urban Educational Leadership emphasis, is the new principal of Susan Miller Dorsey High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

  • Congratulations to new alumnus Dr. Larry Natividad, who successfully defended his dissertation "The Impact of Conflicting Perceptions on the Role and Function of High School Guidance Counselors" on October 26, 2010. Dr. Natividad is Dean of Students at Richard Gahr High School in Cerritos.
