To complete a California Teacher Credential, all aspiring teachers must demonstrate competence in the subject matter discipline(s) in which they wish to teach.
This state subject matter competence requirement can be satisfied by either passing the California Subject Exam for Teachers (CSET) or by completing an approved set of undergraduate courses. The course option is referred to as a Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP).

Students are highly encouraged to get program information and academic advisement as early as possible in order to successfully plan an undergraduate program of study which includes all of the required coursework.
