Ph.D. in Education Welcome Inaugurates Fall Quarter
On September 24, the Department of Education welcomed 14 students entering the inaugural year of the UCI Ph.D. in Education. Eighty-one (81) individuals had applied for admission. Applications were received from six international locations (Taiwan, Australia, China, Egypt, Korea, and United Kingdom) and 13 states. The admitted class of 14 includes two International students from Taiwan, three U.S. students (Connecticut, North Carolina, and Arizona), and nine students who are residents of California. Among the universities the new Ph.D. students attended for their graduate and undergraduate work are Yale, Johns Hopkins, ASU, USC, UNC, and National Taiwan University.
Four of the newly admitted students - Tran Dang, Janice Hansen, Sean Kao, and Nayssan Safavian - will be pursuing the Learning, Cognition, and Development specialization for their doctoral degree. The LCD specialization prepares scholars to carry out research in areas related to cognition, learning, and student development, as well as in the theory and practice of educational measurement, evaluation, and assessment.
Four students - James Leak, Joyce Roys, Erik Ruzek, and Irene Vega - will be studying in the Educational Policy and Social Context specialization. The EPSC specialization prepares scholars to carry out research in areas related to the social, cultural, and organizational context of education; educational policy development and implementation; and the intersection of educational context and policy.
Four students - Yen-lin Chou, Andrea Cons, Laurie Hansen, and Chin-shi Lin - are focusing on the Language, Literacy, and Technology specialization. The LLT specialization prepares scholars to carry out research in areas related to language and literacy development, the use of information and communication technology in education, and the intersection of technology use and language/literacy development.
Two students - Maria Parente and Femi Vance - will be blending two of the above specializations for their education doctorate.
To accommodate the inauguration of a Ph.D. program with existing Ed.D., Master's, and credential programs, the Department of Education has added six new faculty members - Peg Burchinal, AnneMarie Conley, Thad Domina, Joseph Mahoney, Stephanie Reich, and Estela Zarate. Additional recruitments are planned for 2007-8 as the Department continues to grow.
