Middle Earth Education Theme House Residents, DOE, and CFEP Gather for October 3rd Meet and Greet
The residential theme house in Middle Earth Misty Mountain, known as Changing the Future Through Education, hosted the Fall Meet & Greet for new residents and members of the UCI Department of Education (DOE) and the Center for Educational Partnerships (CFEP) on Wednesday, October 3rd. Over 40 students, faculty, and staff gathered for dinner, introductions, and information about education as a field of study and a career.
The 50 freshmen students who are residents of the theme house are living, studying, and socializing in an environment affiliated with the UCI Department of Education and the Center for Educational Partnerships. During the school year, theme house residents will collaborate with UCI faculty, staff, and others, whose research and program initiatives are making significant impacts on schooling, educational access, and education policy in the US and worldwide. Students also will be developing their teamwork, leadership, and public speaking skills through a variety of on- and off-campus activities.
Upcoming activities for residents include a Resource Scavenger Hunt October 8 through 19, where students will learn about campus resources and earn prizes. Throughout the year, residents also will participate in a monthly “Lunch with J.J.” On October 17, “Lunch with JJ” in Pippin Commons, 11:30 to 12:30, will provide an opportunity for students to converse with theme house faculty advisor and DOE Lecturer Jeff Johnston. For following lunch events, additional faculty members will be joining Jeff, along with residents from the Arroyo Vista Education Theme House, to explore current topics and issues impacting education.
Changing the Future Through Education is one of two Education theme houses sponsored by DOE and CFEP. The other residence, Careers in Teaching theme house at Arroyo Vista, is entering its third year as a living and learning community primarily for undergraduates who are aspire to become teachers.
