Master of Arts in Teaching
with California Teacher Credential
Program Overview
The MAT in Education is a full-time program for people seeking careers in teaching and who are interested in earning a masters degree and a teaching credential. Most MAT students complete the program in 15 months, two summers and an academic year. There is the option of entering the MAT Program in the summer immediately following the completion of teaching credential coursework at UCI. However, potential applicants who have competed their credential elsewhere or earlier than immediately following the teaching credential program will not be considered.
The program of study includes completion of six “core” MAT courses, one of the UCI teaching credential programs, and a comprehensive exam. Core courses in the first summer include topics in teaching and educational policy, assessment and evaluation, and advanced learning theories. Courses in the second summer include topics in cognition, educational technology, and action research. Intern teaching candidates enter the MAT program after their first year in the Intern Program. While the MAT Program is a fulltime program it is also flexible to meet the needs of most students.
Courses are taught by Department of Education research faculty. Additional faculty are recruited from other academic units at UCI and the community. This blend of research and practice prepares future teachers for the academic, social and policy challenges of teaching in today’s diverse urban and suburban classrooms.
