Hank Becker Leaves a Legacy of Scholarship, Innovative Research, and Service

Current and former faculty, staff, and students gathered at the University Club on Friday, November 30 to honor Henry Jay Becker (Hank) for his 15 years of service to UC Irvine and his many accomplishments in the field of education. Celebrations were organized around a baseball theme since Hank has been a lifelong devotee to baseball statistics and baseball teams.

The retirement party opened with a photo retrospective of Hank’s life that included pictures of colleagues, family, travels, and work,
accompanied by the sound track from The Natural. Tributes were given by DOE Chair Deborah Vandell, Vice Chair and Emcee Michael Martinez, Graduate Faculty Advisor Dennis Evans, ASU Professor Kathryn Nakagawa, Jason Ravitz of Buck Institute for Education, research associate Jennifer Schwarz, doctoral program graduate Sharon Cordes, and 12 other current and graduated Ed.D. students.

Following a champagne toast, Hank summarized the rewards, contributions, and companionship he will be remembering from both his days as a researcher at Johns Hopkins and his tenure as a professor in the Department of Education. Hank’s many friends and colleagues wished him well in his new pursuits and continuing research but acknowledged that they will miss his presence in the department and the standard of academic excellence he set for himself and others.
