DOE Celebrates 2007 Credential and MAT Students at Traditional Fall Barbecue

The Department of Education held its traditional Fall Welcome Barbecue on Wednesday, September 26, for new students in the Credential and MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching with Teacher Credential) programs. Participants enjoyed home-cooked burgers with all the accompaniments while socializing with DOE faculty and staff in the palm-shaded courtyard of Berkeley Place.

This fall 221 students have enrolled in the UCI Credential programs in order to earn either their Multiple Subject Teacher Credential (for teaching in grades K-6) or their Single Subject Teacher Credential (for teaching in grades 7-12). Seventy-one of these students have opted to earn their Master of Arts in Teaching degree. Thirteen of the students have been selected to participate in the highly competitive Intern Teacher Credential Program.

During 2007-2008, Credential and MAT students at UCI will be immersed in the rich research environment that characterizes the UC system and will be augmenting their academic coursework with real-world experience in Orange County classrooms.

This is the 40th year that UCI has offered a Teacher Credential program. In Fall 2008, current students will join other UCI Credential and MAT alumni in classrooms throughout our state. The Department extends best wishes to our 221 new students as they prepare to enter the challenging and rewarding profession of California educator.
