Financial FAQs
In response to faculty questions about various types of funding, we plan to provide periodic updates/FAQs this year for information and reference.
California's recent economic downturn has created challenges for UC and some uncertainty about the stability of state funding. Based on our current information, this does not change the guidelines provided below. We will share more information as it becomes available.
1. What types of faculty funds are administered in the School?
New faculty, start-up funds
Start up support is determined in the faculty recruitment process. Funds are to be utilized during your first two years of employment. For example, if you joined the faculty in July 2002, funds would lapse June 2004.
School research committee funding (Faculty R & T)
The Academic Senate Council on Research, Computing and Library Resources allocates funds each year to academic units where awards are to be made by School Research Committees (SRCs) for funding faculty research. Executive Committee serves as the SRC for the Department of Education and funds are typically awarded in December. CORCL funds are intended for use during the academic year in which they are awarded.
Departmental allocations and intramural funds
You may receive funding from your department or other campus offices for various activities, such as travel, conference support, and seed grants. Please be aware that any time limits or use restrictions applied to department funds are extended to the faculty recipients.
Faculty Desktop Computing Initiative
The Office of Research and Graduate Studies, through the FDCI program, provides faculty funds to upgrade or purchase new research-related desktop or laptop computers, software, or networking equipment. Guidelines are issued fall quarter with a proposal deadline in December; awards are announced in January and funds must be spent by June 30.
Extramural awards and agreements
The Department of Education’s business office administers all extramural funds. This includes grants; federal, state, and industry contracts; gifts, including foundation funds; and sales and service agreements. Staff provide faculty PIs quarterly updates on active awards, and reports are monthly during the final 3 months of the award period.
2. How do I find out my fund balances?
Your department manager is responsible for monitoring faculty intramural funds, those allocations provided by the school or campus. Desktop computing funds are overseen by Sharon Smith.
The department business office is responsible for your extramural funds, received from public or private sponsors. As awards are received, a financial analyst is assigned to the project. If you have any questions about these assignments, please contact Sharon Smith, principal administrative analyst (x49140).
3. What are lapsing funds?
All intramural and extramural funds have ending dates. These may be driven by the campus fiscal year end (June 30) or various funding agency cycles, and should be noted on your reports. Please do not assume funds can be extended beyond these ending dates or that it is a local decision to carry forward open balances.
We hope this information is useful. Please let us know when you have questions or concerns regarding your funds.
