Social Studies

An effective history classroom is a place that goes beyond the facts of history to the deeper issues and contested views of each era.

With awareness of the scope and importance of their charge, UCI single subject social studies credential candidates often become teacher leaders in schools throughout the region. A credential in history/social science authorizes the holder to teach the following middle and high school subjects:

  • California History
  • Civics
  • Economics
  • U.S. History
  • U.S. Geography
  • World History
  • World Geography

UCI prepares social studies candidates to design lessons for all students, both fluent English speakers and English learners.

History/social studies teachers of today play a special role in promoting inter-cultural literacy and understanding as they support both U.S. natives and immigrant students from all parts of the globe in the acquisition of the ideas of democracy through the California History-Social Science Content Standards.
