Social Science (includes History)
This subject matter preparation programs is offered only to UCI undergraduates who were admitted to UCI at or prior to Spring Quarter 2005, and must be completed by July 1, 2009.
This program satisfies state subject matter competency requirements for public school teachers of social science (including history). In California, social science teachers must be prepared to teach subject matter in the middle and high school curriculum, which includes:
- World, U.S., and California history and geography
- American democracy and U.S. and world government
- Economics
- Ethical, religious, and philosophical ideas in western and non-western cultures
The Social Science SMPP includes courses that cover all of these subject areas.
The coursework in the UCI Social Science Major with a Specialization in Social Sciences for Secondary School Education is well aligned with the requirements of this Social Science SMPP. (UCI History majors should talk with a counselor in the Department of Education Student Services Office about new options for students majoring in history that will be approved in 2006.) However, participation in this program does not require a major in social science or history. All students should seek academic advisement to successfully plan an undergraduate program of study that includes all of the required SMPP coursework. The pdfument titled “Social Science Subject Matter Preparation Program Course Requirements” includes advisement contact information (see below).
Enrollment is required for participation in the Social Science SMPP (see below).
Eligibility: Requirements for the subject matter preparation program will be revised in 2006 based on new state standards. Students who enter UCI prior to July 1, 2005, and who have completed at least one of the SMPP required courses on this flier prior to July 1, 2005, are eligible to complete the subject matter preparation program described here. Students who enter UCI on or after July 1, 2005 are not eligible for the existing subject matter preparation program, and should contact the Department of Education Student Services Office for an update about the status of a new set of subject mater requirements (949-824-3348).
