Latin
This subject matter preparation programs is offered only to UCI undergraduates who were admitted to UCI at or prior to Spring Quarter 2005, and must be completed by July 1, 2009.
This program satisfies state subject matter competency requirements for public school teachers of Latin. In California, Latin teachers must be prepared to teach subject matter in the middle and high school curriculum, which includes:
- Language development
- Language and linguistic analysis
- Civilization and culture
The Latin SMPP includes courses that cover all of these subject areas.
The coursework in the UCI Classics major with a Latin emphasis is well aligned with the requirements of this Latin SMPP. However, participation in this program does not require a major in Classics. All students should seek academic advisement to successfully plan an undergraduate program of study that includes all of the required SMPP coursework.
