English

This subject matter preparation programs is offered only to UCI undergraduates who were admitted to UCI at or prior to Spring Quarter 2005, and must be completed by July 1, 2009.

This program satisfies state subject matter competency requirements for public school teachers of English.  In California, English teachers must be prepared to teach subject matter in the middle and high school curriculum, which includes:

  • Literature
  • Language, linguistics and literacy
  • Composition and rhetoric
  • Communications, speech, media, and creative performance

The English SMPP includes courses that cover all of these subject areas.

The coursework in the UCI English major is well aligned with the requirements of this English SMPP. However, participation in this program does not require a major in English.  All students should seek academic advisement to successfully plan an undergraduate program of study that includes all of the required SMPP coursework.  The pdfument titled “English Subject Matter Preparation Program Course Requirements” includes advisement contact information (see below).

Enrollment is required for participation in the English SMPP (see below).

Eligibility: Requirements for the subject matter preparation program will be revised in 2006 based on new state standards. Students who enter UCI prior to July 1, 2005, and who have completed at least one of the SMPP required courses on this flier prior to July 1, 2005, are eligible to complete the subject matter preparation program described here.  Students who enter UCI on or after July 1, 2005 are not eligible for the existing subject matter preparation program, and should contact the Department of Education Student Services Office for an update about the status of a new set of subject mater requirements (949-824-3348).
