This full-time program occurs in collaboration with local school districts and is contingent upon specific demand. The Five-Quarter Intern Credential Program (Sample Program) commences when eligible applicants interview in January with our school district partners to secure a commitment from a district for a paid, year-long internship. Academic work begins with the spring quarter and continues through the following summer session in preparation for assuming full-time, or nearly full-time, teaching responsibilities in the subsequent fall. This progression is subject to fulfillment of all course requirements in the spring and summer and demonstration to the satisfaction of the host district of readiness to teach during an intense spring fieldwork experience. UCI coursework is lighter during the internship period, but there is a continuing program of academic work on the UCI campus.
UC Irvine offers Internship Credential Programs in Single Subject Math, Science and English only.
The Internship credential has the same legal status as the CCTC preliminary Credential except that it is only valid in one school district. For this reason, interns must have a contract before a credential can be issued. Each intern candidate must work under the direct and continuing supervision of a UC IRVINE supervisor and a district supervisor for the duration of the Internship.
To be eligible for internship credential, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 90 quarter units of their undergraduate work
- CBEST pass card (California Basic Educational Skills Test)
- Subject matter competence requirement met via exam (appropriate CSET) or completed commission-approved subject matter preparation program (SMPP)
- Character and identification clearance (fingerprints) has been completed
- US Constitution requirement has been met.
Steps to becoming a UC Irvine intern:
- STEP 1: Apply to the UC IRVINE credential program by the application deadline. Candidates found to meet the minimum UC admission requirements will advance to Step 2.
- STEP 2: Interview with UC IRVINE Intern Coordinator. Successful candidates will advance to Step 3.
- STEP 3: Interview with school districts, as arranged by the UC IRVINE Intern Coordinator. Successful candidates will receive an offer for pre-intern fieldwork from a school district and receive an offer of admission from UC IRVINE for Spring Quarter. Opportunity to advance to intern teaching will be dependent upon successful completion of Spring Quarter coursework and a job offer from the school district. (Successful completion of coursework is determined by receiving grades of B or better in all coursework). Successful candidates will advance to Step 4.
- STEP 4: Continue enrollment in courses through Summer Session and apply for the Intern Credential.
- STEP 5: Continue enrollment in courses at UC IRVINE while teaching at the school site for the academic year.
- STEP 6: Upon successful completion of all required coursework and the intern teaching requirement, candidate will submit necessary documentation to the credential counselor for recommendation to the State for the preliminary teaching credential.
Program Prerequisite
Before beginning the program, students must successfully complete EDUC 176 (Psychology of Learning, Abilities, and Intelligence) or EDUC 173 (Cognition and Learning in Educational Settings). EDUC 173 is offered every quarter for current UCI students. Non-UCI students may enroll in an on-line course offered Winter, Spring, or Summer quarters through University Extension.
